The Mandarin Oriental London

THE MANDARIN ORIENTAL HOTEL

Mandarin Oriental Mayfair in London

Mayfair isn’t big on change. It’s a neighbourhood of private members’ clubs, art galleries, and townhouses that have looked the same for generations. So when a new luxury hotel opens here, the first in over a decade, it’s not just another launch.

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel, London, rises against the historic backdrop of Hanover Square with the UK’s longest handmade brick baguettes. Inside, the design drops Mayfair’s usual dark wood and heavy interiors. A floating spiral staircase carved from green Ming marble curves up through a triple-height atrium filled with natural light.

In this Mandarin Oriental review, you’ll see what works, what feels genuinely new for Mayfair, and where the experience falls slightly short.

Rest & Retreat

The hotel is tiny by London standards, with just 50 rooms. The design is based on a jewellery box concept, which means the rooms aren’t huge, but they are incredibly detailed with marble, silk, and brass.

Deluxe & Studio Rooms

Every room features hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper in a signature blue, patterned with magnolias to match the trees in Hanover Square outside.

Rooms & Suites

Deluxe Rooms

These rooms are cocoon spaces, with the sliding screens between the bedroom and marble bathroom. You can keep them open to let the light flow through or slide them shut to box off the bathroom.

Rooms & Suites

Studio Rooms

The rooms have an open-plan layout that adds a sitting area and a marble bathroom with a walk-in shower.

Both categories include floor-to-ceiling windows to pull in natural light.

Rooms & Suites

Executive Suites

These feel the most contemporary, trading some of the signature blue for bold wooden panelling. The layout is built for hosting, featuring a separate living room with a statement bar.

The marble bathrooms are massive and include double basins, a soaking tub, and a separate walk-in shower.

Rooms & Suites

Deluxe Suites

At 51 square meters, these rooms are bright, open spaces defined by floor-to-ceiling windows. The decor uses a calmer blue and cream palette, maintaining the jewellery box feel through detailed textiles.

You get a dedicated living area with sofa seating and the full tub-and-shower bathroom setup.

Rooms & Suites

Studio Suites

Studio suites are ideal for travellers who need a functional workspace. Located on the corner elevations, they offer more natural light and a separate living area with a desk.

They include an extra guest powder room, keeping your main spa-like bathroom entirely private if you have visitors.

All suite guests receive complimentary drop-offs within a mile and a round-trip airport transfer for stays of two nights or more.

These centre on a shared lounge with sofa seating. You get different layouts: primary bathrooms with full tubs and walk-in showers, and second bedrooms using sliding screens to adjust the space.

Family Rooms

Two-Bedroom Mayfair Suite

This one is great for hosting. It is the only space mixing the signature blue wallpaper with a bold burgundy design. It includes a six-seater dining table under a porcelain leaf chandelier and a full kitchen with a wine fridge and bar.

Dining at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel

The dining here centres around a massive, sun-lit courtyard and a rooftop with some of the best views in the neighbourhood.

Atrium Restaurant

Atrium Restaurant

This is the main hub under a huge triple-height skylight. It’s open for breakfast and lunch with a menu that’s mostly European but sneaks in some Korean flavours.

The Vibe: Very airy and dramatic because of the marble staircase and the glass ceiling.

Dining at The Mandarin Oriental

Hanover Bar

This is the rooftop spot. It only has about 50 seats, so it feels quite private, and the terrace looks out over everything from the London Eye to Hampstead Heath.

The Snacks: It’s not just drinks; you can get proper sushi, Wagyu tacos, and Toro caviar nigiri up here. It’s a great sunset spot.

The Drinks: The cocktails are themed around Mayfair landmarks.

Wellness Philosophy at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel

The wellness area is a subterranean space tucked away from the noise of Mayfair. It feels much larger than you’d expect for a 50-room hotel and focuses heavily on high-tech recovery. It’s rooted in the brand’s traditional Oriental philosophy.

Wellness at The Mandarin Oriental

Intelligent Movement

This is a brand-wide program designed to help with the physical toll of travel and tech-neck. In Mayfair, they apply this through the Bodyspace partnership, using posture analysis and specific treatments to release tension in the neck, shoulders, and lower back.

Pause & Reset

The hotel follows a newer hormonal wellness initiative called Pause & Reset. It’s focused on managing stress and energy levels through diet, movement, and treatments. They use products from Aromatherapy Associates that are specifically blended to help reset your internal clock, which is a lifesaver if you’ve just landed from a different time zone.

Signature Rituals

Even in this ultra-modern setting, they still offer the “Mandarin Oriental Signature Spa Therapies.” These were developed with specialists in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and master aromatherapists. Each session starts with a quick consultation to determine your element for the day, and they use custom-blended oils to bring your energy back into balance.

Pool & Thermal Suite

The 25-metre heated indoor pool sits beneath the hotel, creating a quiet, almost subterranean atmosphere. Next to it, you’ll find a full thermal suite with a sauna, steam room, and vitality pools fitted with massage jets.

Fitness

The gym is managed in partnership with Bodyspace and focuses on biomechanics and performance rather than just cardio machines. Equipment includes Technogym strength systems and a Reform RX Pilates machine with a digital screen for guided sessions.

Final Words

The Mandarin Oriental Mayfair brings something genuinely new to one of London’s most traditional neighbourhoods. The design wows. The rooms and suites are full of thoughtful details. And the dining and wellness experiences live up to the brand’s reputation. The only minor drawback is that some of the hotel’s facilities, like the rooftop bar, are small and can feel busy at peak times.
